John Rankin Gamble

John Rankin Gamble (born January 15, 1848 in Alabama , Genesee County , New York , †  August 14, 1891 in Yankton , South Dakota ) was an American politician . In 1891 he represented the second constituency of the state of South Dakota in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

John Gamble came from a well-known family of politicians. His younger brother Robert represented the state of South Dakota in both houses of Congress between 1895 and 1912 . His nephew Ralph sat for New York State in the US House of Representatives between 1937 and 1956. Gamble attended his home public schools and moved with his parents to Fox Lake , Wisconsin , in 1862 . After studying at Lawrence University , he studied law until 1873. After being admitted to the bar, he began practicing his new profession in Yankton, Dakota Territory .

Political career

Gamble became a member of the Republican Party . From 1876 to 1878 he was a district attorney in Yankton County; thereafter, he served briefly as the territory's federal attorney. Between 1877 and 1879 he was a member of the Territorial House of Representatives. In 1878 he was also a member of the Territorial Government Council from 1881 to 1885. In the congressional election of 1890, John Gamble was elected to succeed Oscar S. Gifford in the US House of Representatives. His term began on March 4, 1891. Gamble died in August of that year, before the first session of the House of Representatives. He was buried in Yankton.
