Charles A. Christopherson

Charles Andrew Christopherson (born July 23, 1871 in Amherst Township , Fillmore County , Minnesota , † November 2, 1951 in Sioux Falls , South Dakota ) was an American politician . Between 1919 and 1933 he represented the first constituency of the state of South Dakota in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and political advancement

Charles Christopherson attended public schools in his homeland. In 1890 he moved to Sioux Falls. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1893, he began to work in this profession in 1893. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . From 1908 to 1918 he was a member of the school council in Sioux Falls and between 1912 and 1916 he was a member of the House of Representatives from South Dakota . There he acted as speaker of the house in his last term of office .

Congressman and further résumé

In the 1918 congressional elections, Charles Christopherson was elected to succeed Charles Hall Dillon in the US House of Representatives. After several re-elections, he was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress between March 4, 1919 and March 3, 1933 . In the elections of 1932 and 1934 he was defeated by Fred H. Hildebrandt of the Democratic Party .

After his time in Washington , Christopherson returned to practice as a lawyer. He also got into banking. In June 1944 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago . From 1941 to 1943 he headed the committee in South Dakota that dealt with war-related savings ( War Saving Staff ). He also became an advisor to the Federal Commission on War Bonds. Charles Christopherson died in 1951.
