Dustin M. Johnson (born September 30, 1976 in Pierre , South Dakota ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). Since January 3, 2019, he has been a South Dakota MP in the United States House of Representatives . From 2011 to 2014 Johnson was Chief of Staff to the Governor of South Dakota.

Life

Dusty Johnson attended TF Riggs High School in his hometown of Pierre and graduated from high school in 1995. He then successfully studied political science at the University of South Dakota . In 1998 he received a Harry S. Truman Fellowship and worked for the Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC In 2002, he earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Kansas . The following year Johnson served as political advisor to then South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds . At times he was also a research fellow at Dakota Wesleyan University . Dusty Johnson is married with three sons.

In 2004 Dusty Johnson was elected to the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission . In 2007 he became its chairman. In 2010, Johnson was re-elected. Shortly thereafter, however, he resigned after he was appointed Chief of Staff by South Dakota's new Governor Dennis Daugaard . In November 2014, Johnson withdrew from politics for the time being and became vice president of the telecommunications company Vantage Point Solutions in Mitchell, South Dakota .

On November 15, 2016, Johnson announced its bid to be the seat of the congressional electoral district of South Dakota at-large , which represents the entire state. South Dakota's Congresswoman Kristi Noem had previously announced that she was leaving the House of Representatives to run for governor of the state. In the Republican primary on June 5, 2018, Johnson prevailed against Secretary of State Shantel Krebs and Senator Neal Tapio. In November 2018 he was elected to the House of Representatives. He began his term in office on January 3, 2019. Dusty Johnson is considered a moderate Republican. On March 26, 2019, he was one of fourteen Republicans in the House of Representatives who voted for the lifting of the national emergency on the border with Mexico; However, he supports President Donald Trump's planned construction of a continuous border wall on the border with Mexico. He also speaks out against abortion ( pro-life ) and advocates limiting the term of office of congressmen to twelve years. Johnson is a member of the National Rifle Association .

On February 19, 2020, Johnson announced that he would defend his position in the upcoming congressional elections. On June 2, 2020, he prevailed in the Republican Party primary against Liz Marty May , who had previously been a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives, with 77 percent of the vote. Thus, in the November 2020 election for the United States House of Representatives, he will run against Randy Luallin of the Libertarian Party.
