Fred Hermann Hildebrandt (born August 2, 1874 in West Bend , Wisconsin , † January 26, 1956 in Bradenton , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1939 he represented the first constituency of the state of South Dakota in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and political advancement

In 1888 Fred Hildebrandt moved with his parents to Waupun , where he attended public schools; in 1900 he moved to Watertown , South Dakota. Between 1903 and 1932 he worked for the railroad. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . From 1922 to 1923 he was a member of the House of Representatives from South Dakota . Between 1927 and 1931 he was also chairman of the Hunting and Fishing Committee of South Dakota.

Congressman and further résumé

In the 1932 congressional elections, Hildebrandt was elected to the US House of Representatives in South Dakota's first constituency. There he replaced Charles A. Christopherson from the Republican Party on March 4, 1933 , whom he had defeated in the elections. After a few re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 1939. In 1938 he decided not to run again. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully within his party for the nomination as a US Senator .

In 1942, his attempt to return to the US House of Representatives failed. In 1944 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention , on which President Franklin D. Roosevelt was nominated for the fourth and final time as a candidate for president. Hildebrandt then retired. He died in Florida in 1956 and was buried in Watertown.
