Royal C. Johnson

Royal Cleaves Johnson (born October 3, 1882 in Cherokee , Iowa , † August 2, 1939 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1915 and 1933 he represented the second constituency of the state of South Dakota in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and advancement

In March 1883, Royal Johnson came to Highmore , Hyde County , South Dakota with his parents as a toddler . There he also attended the public schools. By 1906 he studied law at the University of South Dakota . After his admission to the bar in the same year, he began to work in this profession in Highmore. From 1906 to 1907 he was the deputy district attorney in Hyde County, from 1908 to 1909 then the actual district attorney. Between 1910 and 1914 he served as Attorney General of South Dakota. In 1913 Johnson moved to Aberdeen where he continued to work as a lawyer.

Johnson in Congress

In the 1914 congressional elections, Johnson was elected as the Republican Party candidate to the US House of Representatives. He exercised this mandate after the corresponding re-elections between March 4, 1915 and March 3, 1933 in nine legislative terms. During the First World War , he suspended his mandate for a few months from January 1918 to fight in the US Army . In Congress , Johnson served as Chairman of the War Department Expenditure Control Committee from 1921 to 1925, and Chairman of the Committee on World War I Veteran Claims from 1929 to 1932.

Another résumé

After he had not run for a further term in 1932, he left Congress in March 1933. He then worked as a lawyer in Washington. He died there in August 1939. Royal Johnson was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
