Shantel Swedlund Krebs (born April 28, 1973 in De Smet , South Dakota ) is an American entrepreneur and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Shantel Swedlund is the fourth generation in South Dakota. She grew up on a farm near Arlington in Kingsbury County . The family grew crops. Her father also worked as a truck driver and founded his own company for the transport of grain and cattle. Her mother did the bookkeeping. Her parents taught her the value of hard work and accountability for tasks completed early on in her life, which shaped her later life. Her daily work on the farm was like this: get up early, work as hard as you can, mind your own business, say your prayers, get a good night's sleep and start over the next day. The entrepreneurial spirit was instilled in her early on. She ran her first company at the age of ten. She bought a used push mower from her brother and subsequently made $ 4  a yard mowing the lawn. In doing so, she learned how to pay for her expenses and stick to her mother's budget. Many of their customers also invited them to cookies . She later, like her sister, worked as a waitress at the City Cafe in Arlington to pay for her education. She was the first member of her family to graduate from college. Her parents taught her that chances in life are not just given. You have to go out and earn it. After graduating from high school, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion ( Clay County ). In 1997 she was elected Miss South Dakota.

She was subsequently interviewed by a local television presenter named Mitch Krebs. He was a saxophone player like herself. Both were asked to play together at a charity event. They were engaged a few months later and then married in July 1999.

Swedlund has worked in the health sector, in business consulting and as an entrepreneur. She owned and operated two businesses in Sioux Falls . From 2005 to 2010 she ran The Red Shoe. She then worked as a sales consultant for Old Gringo from 2009 to 2010 . She has been running the consulting firm Milo Belle Consultants, LLC since 2010 . with business and retail customers in the United States and Canada .

Swedlund also has a political career. In 2002, she ran for a seat in the South Dakota House of Representatives . She served in the South Dakota House of Representatives from 2004 to 2010 and in the South Dakota Senate from 2010 to 2015 . During that time, she was Majority Whip in the South Dakota Senate from 2010 to 2015 . She was elected the 28th  Secretary of State of South Dakota in the 2014 election. In January 2015 she took up her new post. On March 14, 2017, she announced her candidacy for the at-large congressional seat of South Dakota in the US Congress in the 2018 elections. She will compete against former commissioner of the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission and former chief of staff Dusty Johnson , who served in the administration of South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard .

In her spare time, she volunteers, rides, hunts, and explores South Dakota. She currently lives with her husband on a small ranch in Fort Pierre ( Stanley County ).
