Joyce Hazeltine
Iola Joyce Hazeltine (born July 16, 1935 in Pierre , South Dakota , † September 30, 2016 in Custer , South Dakota) was an American teacher and politician ( Republican Party ).
Career
Iola Joyce Simpson was born in 1935 to Howard and Ofa Mae Simpson in Pierre, Hughes County . Her childhood was overshadowed by the Great Depression and the following years by World War II . Simpson attended Fort Pierre High School. She joined the cheerleading team in her first year . She also worked as a page in the legislature. She graduated as the second best graduate of the year. She subsequently earned a teaching degree from Huron College. She then taught in Aberdeen , Custer and Eureka . Simpson was elected President of the State Jaycettes.
In 1956 she married Dave Hazeltine. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in July 2016. The couple had three children: Derek, Tara and Kirk.
Simpson also had a political career. She was Assistant Chief Clerk in the South Dakota House of Representatives and the first female Secretary to the South Dakota Senate . In 1986 she was elected Secretary of State of South Dakota. Simpson was re-elected several times. She held the post from 1987 to 2003. During her final tenure, she served as President of the National Association of Secretaries of State .
On September 30, 2016, she died of complications from cancer in Custer. Her memorial service took place there on October 8, 2016 in the Custer Lutheran Fellowship Church.
