Otto Christopher Berg (born September 10, 1849 in Brøttum , Norway , † August 1, 1905 in Redfield , South Dakota , United States ) was an American businessman, businessman and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Otto Christopher Berg, son of Christian T. and Christence Berg, was born during the reign of the Swedish King Oskar I in Norway, which at that time formed a union with Sweden . He went to school in Norway. He found his first job in a clerk's position in a general store in Lillehammer . Later he worked as an accountant in a wholesaler in Drammen . Berg emigrated to the United States in 1873. He moved to Wisconsin and settled there in Norwalk ( Monroe County ) down. Over time, his influence and notoriety in the city increased. Berg served as postmaster and county clerk. Then he moved to the Dakota Territory and settled in Northville ( Spink County ). There he went about business with everyday goods. In this context, he founded a successful trading business. Berg worked as a clerk at the district court and the district court for six years. He became an early leader in the Republican Party. He was elected Secretary of State of South Dakota in the 1900 elections. Berg was re-elected in 1902. Shortly before his death, he was seen as a serious challenger in the next election for the governor of South Dakota.

On May 1, 1879, he married his wife Edith Olive Rowe (1856–1930). Rowe was born in Cold Spring, Wisconsin. Her father was David R. Rowe, an influential citizen there. The couple had two daughters and a son: Edna Matthea Berg (1880-1904), Christene Berg († in childhood) and Paul Burnham Berg (1888-1935). Otto Christopher Berg belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran Church , while his wife was a member of a congregational church .

Throughout his life, Berg was a member of many orders including Redfield Lodge No. 34, the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in Redfield, the Redfield Chapter No. 20, the Royal Arch Masonry , the South Dakota Consistory, the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Masons in Aberdeen , Northville Lodge No. 36 and the Ancient Order of United Workmen in Northville.
