George H. Hand

George Harper Hand (born August 9, 1837 in Akron , Ohio , † March 10, 1891 in Pierre , South Dakota ) was an American lawyer, soldier and politician .

Career

George Harper Hand was born in Summit County in 1837 . His childhood was overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the following years by the Mexican-American War . He studied law and practiced as a lawyer. During the Civil War , he served in the Union Army in 1864 and was part of the Chicago Board of Trade Battery.

In 1865 he moved to the Dakota Territory and settled in Yankton , the administrative seat of Yankton County . Two years later he was appointed United States Attorney for the Dakota Territory. He held the post from 1866 to 1869. He later worked as a register in the land registry. From 1874 to 1883 he was Secretary of State of the Dakota Territory. During this time, the Territorial Governor of the Dakota Territory William Alanson Howard was unable to exercise his office due to health problems from 1879 until his death in April 1880. Therefore, until the appointment of his successor Nehemiah G. Ordway in June 1880 , Hand served as acting territorial governor of the Dakota Territory for almost a year.

After the end of his tenure, he accepted a position as counsel with the Northwestern Railway in charge of the Dakota Territory - a position which he held until his death in 1891 when he attended a session of the State Legislature in Pierre .

With his wife Helen K. († 1924) he had a daughter named Helen Josephine "Josie" (1861-1932). It was in McGregor ( Iowa born).
