Clara Halls

Clara Beatrice Engebretson Halls (born February 26, 1895 in Garretson , South Dakota , † January 2, 1997 ) was an American teacher and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Clara Beatrice Engebretson was born in 1895 as the daughter of John Christian Engebretson (1867-1935) and his wife Christine (1869-1952) born on the family farm in Garretson ( Minnehaha County ) and grew up there. She had five brothers, Oscar Clarence (1890–1968), Elmer Julius (1892–1962), Adolph M. (1900–1900), Ralph Hove (1905–1992) and Rudolph Theodore (1908–2006), and three sisters, including Alma Oline (1891–1973), and Laura Constance (1898–1992). She went to school in Garretson. After graduating from Garretson High School in 1913, she attended college at the University of South Dakota , where she earned a Bachelor of Arts . Her student days were overshadowed by the First World War . After graduating, she taught in schools for several years.

On September 6, 1922, she married Anton C. Halls (1889–1956). After their marriage, she assisted her husband in his law firm, kept City Auditor records and assisted in tax matters for many years.

During World War II she spent three years as an instructor in code at Sioux Falls Air Base. She sat on the State Soldiers Home Board for seven years .

Engebretson has been an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary since it was founded in 1919. In that context, she held the post of State President for the Northwestern Division for a time , which includes seven states. She was also an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star . She was Past Matron from the local branch and a certified Grand Historian. She was also an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson for many years. Engebretson organized and directed children's and youth choirs, but also directed many other activities.

In the 1956 election she was elected Secretary of State of South Dakota for a two-year term . She held the post from 1957 to 1959.

In 1980 she was recorded at Palisade Manor in Garretson.

After her death in 1997, she was buried in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Garretson.

Trivia

Engebretson had a log cabin on Split Rock Creek.
