Mount Hawkes is a striking and 1975 m high mountain in the West Antarctic Queen Elizabeth Land . It is the highest point along the Washington Escarpment and looms in the Neptune Range of the Pensacola Mountains on the east side of the Jones Valley .
The mountain was discovered and photographed on January 13, 1956 during the non-stop transantarctic flight from McMurdo Sound to the Weddell Sea and back during the United States Navy's first Operation Deep Freeze . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him in 1957 after William Michael Hawkes (1910-1994), co-pilot of the P2V-2N Neptune , with which this flight was accomplished.
