Lorna B. Herseth

Lorna Helene Bertha Buntrock Herseth (born April 5, 1909 in Westport , South Dakota , † September 8, 1994 in Houghton , South Dakota) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). The Governor of South Dakota Ralph Herseth was her husband and the US Congressman from South Dakota Stephanie Herseth Sandlin was her granddaughter.

Career

Lorna Helene Bertha Buntrock was born in 1909 as the youngest of eleven children of Albert Paul Buntrock (1856-1921) and his wife Ida Minnie (1870-1961), née Yeske, in Westport ( Brown County ). Her siblings were Herman Johannes Bernhard (1888–1928), Albert August (1890–1966), Anna Clara Elise (1891–1950), Ernst Franz Wilhelm (1892–1967), Otto Carl (1896–1976), August Frederich (1898 –1959), Rudolph Emil “Rudy” (1901–1974), Robert Theodore (1903–1924), Louise Ida Albertina (1905–1976) and Bernhardt Herbert “Ben” (1907–1986). The family was of German descent. Buntrock grew up on a farm northwest of Columbia, South Dakota and attended high school in Columbia, where she met her classmate and future husband, Ralph Herseth, and fell in love with him. Herseth was the youngest of eight children. His family was from Norway and lived eight miles from the Buntrocks farm at the time  . Herseth was free from Buntrock for eleven years. The world economic crisis overshadowed this time. The couple finally married on December 23, 1937 in Columbia and had three children in the ensuing period. At the time of their wedding, Buntrock was Superintendent of Schools in Brown County, and Herseth was overseeing the Sand Lake Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp. After their wedding, they went to California for their honeymoon and then back. Your first night they spent in the St. Charles Hotel in Pierre ( Hughes County ). Before she got married, Buntrock attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, Brown County, where she earned a two-year teaching certificate, with which she taught in rural schools before becoming Superintendent of Schools of Brown County.

Buntrock lived intermittently for nearly 30 years with her husband on a ranch on the east side of Sand Lake near Houghton. Herseth served in the South Dakota Senate for many years and served as South Dakota’s 21st Governor from 1959 to 1961. Buntrock acted as his first lady during his tenure as governor . After the death of her husband on January 24, 1969, Buntrock lived for a short time in Aberdeen. During that time, the Democratic Party asked her to run for Secretary of State of South Dakota, which she eventually did. Buntrock won the 1972 election and subsequent re-election. She held the post from 1973 to 1979.

After retiring from the political scene, she lived in Pierre. Buntrock made a study trip to the Holy Land , which was sponsored by Northern State University . She also went on trips to Holden Village ( Washington ), a Christian retreat in the North Cascades Mountains . Buntrock played bridge , raised irises ( glorious irises ) and wrote an autobiography .
