from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Gefers (* 3. May 1908 in Dolgov , † 6. December 1965 in Isernhagen ) was a German painter graphic artist and amateur - documentary .

Life

After the Second World War, Otto Gefers lived in a house in Isernhagen at the end of the 1940s, in the middle of the forest on the outskirts of Hanover in what was then the artists' colony In der Große Heide , a wooded area between the A2 motorway and the Wietze . Towards the end of the British military government , Gefers was one of the jurors of the Kunstverein Hannover , together with the sculptor Hermann Scheuertstuhl , when he wrote a letter to his jury colleague on December 12, 1948 under the letterhead of Gertrud Gefers -Handweberei  , which later became part of the estate of Chafing chair in the Georg Kolbe Museum Berlin.

Gefers was in lively contact with the painter Carl Buchheister , with whom he sometimes telephoned for an hour every evening on art matters.

Otto Gefers was chairman of the Association of Visual Artists Northwest Germany from 1952 to 1965 . During this time, in 1953, as one of the artists in West Germany, he sent the Third German Art Exhibition organized by the State Commission for Art Affairs of the GDR in the Albertinum in Dresden , actually the third art exhibition in the GDR . But Gertrud Gefers also made a name for herself in those years, winning the Lower Saxony State Prize for the creative craft in 1958, for example . In 1961, the hand weaving master, who at the time lived in the Isernhagen-Süd district of Hanover at the address In der Große Heide 26 , exhibited, for example, a tapestry with a partial view of the New City Hall of Hanover .

Day attack on Hanover in 1943

A few days after the air raids on Hanover on July 26, 1943, Otto Gefers secretly and illegally took pictures with an 8-millimeter film camera at various locations in the destroyed inner city of Hanover. The total of around 3 minutes long film material in a box with the inscription "Day attack Hanover 1943" was posthumously given in 2018 by an acquaintance of the family in the Historical Museum Hanover , who allowed the free screening of the film document in the foyer of the house for the period from 26. by July 29th of the year through the daily press.
