John L. Bretz

John Lewis Bretz (born September 21, 1852 in Huntingburg , Dubois County , Indiana , †  December 25, 1920 in Jasper , Indiana) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1895 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Bretz attended public schools in his home country including Huntingburg High School . Between 1876 and 1880 he worked as a teacher. After studying law at Cincinnati Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1880, he began working in this profession in Jasper. Between 1884 and 1890 he was a prosecutor in the eleventh judicial district of Indiana.

Politically, Bretz was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1890 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded John H. O'Neall on March 4, 1891 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1895 . In 1894 he was not re-confirmed.

After retiring from the US House of Representatives, Bretz worked as a district judge in Pike County and Dubois County. He held this office between 1895 and his death. In 1900 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Kansas City , where William Jennings Bryan was nominated for the second time as a presidential candidate. John Bretz died in Jasper on December 25, 1920 and was buried in Huntingburg.
