Thomas Hammond (politician)

Thomas Hammond (born February 27, 1843 in Fitchburg , Massachusetts , †  September 21, 1909 in Hammond , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1895 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Hammond attended the public schools in his home country and then worked as a carpenter and contract worker. In 1864 he moved to Detroit , Michigan , where he worked in the butcher business. In 1876 he settled in Hammond, Indiana. Between 1888 and 1893 he was mayor of this city; he also went into banking. Between 1892 and 1907 he was President of the Commercial Bank of Hammond .

Politically, Hammond belonged to the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1892 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded David H. Patton on March 4, 1893 . Since he refused to run again in 1894, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1895 . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Hammond resumed his previous activities. He also got into the real estate business. He was also a member of Hammond City Council and its Police Committee. He died in this city on September 21, 1909.
