Joseph B. Cheadle
Joseph Bonaparte Cheadle (born August 14, 1842 in Perrysville , Vermillion County , Indiana , † May 28, 1904 in Frankfort , Indiana) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1891 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Joseph Cheadle attended the public schools in his home country and then began studying at Asbury University in Greencastle , which later became DePauw University . But Cheadle dropped out of his studies to take part in the Civil War as a soldier in an Indiana volunteer unit . After the war he studied law at Indianapolis Law College until 1867 . After his admission to the bar, he began working in this profession in Newport . He continued his legal practice until 1873; then he got into the newspaper business.
Politically, Cheadle was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1886 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Thomas B. Ward on March 4, 1887 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1891 . In 1890 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. Two years later he sought, again unsuccessfully, the Republican nomination for the congressional elections.
In the following years Cheadle moved to the Democratic Party . In 1896 and 1898, he applied unsuccessfully to return to Congress. In 1896 he became editor of the American Standard newspaper. Joseph Cheadle died on May 28, 1904 in Frankfort, where he was also buried.
