history
The brothers John, William and Nicholas Pence, originally from Warren County (Ohio) , first settled on the land where Frankfort is today in 1829. In 1830 the brothers donated 60 acres (0.2 km 2 ) to the county commissioners, which resulted in Frankfort becoming the administrative seat instead of Jefferson, a parish that had also applied for the administrative seat. The city was named at the request of the Frankfort brothers, in recognition of their German great-grandparents, who came from Frankfurt am Main .
The town of Frankfort was founded on over 60 acres by William Douglass, the county agent. The land map was drawn up on June 8, 1830. The original land map divided the area into 64 plots in eight blocks, which enclose the public square on which the courthouse stands today. The County Board hires designers Allen & Michael to build the first courthouse for $ 20 . The building was 1 1 ⁄ 2- story high and made of trees from the area, assembled into a temporary building. The successor was built by contractor John Elder in 1837-1838 for $ 12,000 and was in use for 45 years. The from Indianapolis native architect George W. Bunting drafted in 1881, the third courthouse of the city, a 165 ft (50.29 m) tall building of limestone, built by Farman & Pearce for about 200,000 dollars. The foundation stone was laid on September 2, 1882.
The youngest elected mayor of Frankfort was Robert Keene, aged 21. He assumed the office of mayor in January 1922, about a month before the fire at Old Stoney on February 24, 1922. At the time of the fire, Old Stoney was being used as a high school. Today Old Stoney is used as a town hall.
In addition to Old Stoney, the Christian Ridge Historic District , the Clinton County Courthouse , the Charles H. and Emma Condon House , the Frankfort Commercial Historic District, and the South Frankfort Historic District are listed as buildings on the National Register of Historic Places .
