Anthony Caruso
Anthony "Tony" Caruso (born April 7, 1916 in Frankfort , Indiana , † April 4, 2003 in Brentwood , California ) was an American actor .
life and career
Anthony Caruso was born the son of Italian immigrants in Indiana, his father worked as a fruit dealer. At the age of 10 he moved with his family to Long Beach , initially he wanted to be a singer. He trained as an actor at the Pasadena Playhouse , where he befriended Alan Ladd - they later shot 12 films together, with Caruso often being used as an opponent to Ladd. He made his film debut in 1940 in the thriller Johnny Apollo alongside Tyrone Power and Dorothy Lamour .
Already in Johnny Apollo Caruso took on a rogue role as a gangster thug and in the following decades the tall, broad-shouldered actor was to remain true to this type of role. With his southern appearance, he played different ethnicities such as Italians, Indians, Mexicans, Arabs, Persians and South Americans. He had one of his best-known roles as the safe cracker Louis Ciavelli in John Huston's film classic Asphalt-Jungle from 1950. He also played in many westerns, for example Queen of the Mountains with Barbara Stanwyck or Saskatschewan with Alan Ladd, and two Tarzan strips. From the 1960s on, Caruso worked almost exclusively for television. In western series such as Smoking Colts , Bonanza or The People from Shiloh Ranch , he again took on rogue roles. In some television series of the 1960s and 1970s, he played a more likeable character for once.
In the course of his Hollywood career between 1940 and 1990, Caruso played in around 120 feature films and 140 television productions. From 1940 until his death, a total of 63 years, he was married to his wife Tonia Valente. The father of two died on April 4, 2003, three days before his 87th birthday.
