action

Victoria and Martin Scott live in Santa Rita, California with their mother Marjorie. The housekeeper Angie and her granddaughter Booley also belong to the household. Marjorie did everything to give her children a good future. She has been courted by the wealthy interior designer Philip Ames for some time. Martin Scott, usually called Marty, would like to see his mother marry Philip, also because he wants to study at Princeton University . To keep him even closer to himself, Philip gives the young man a car. Victoria, called Vickie, is less enthusiastic about the architect because she thinks he is a snob .

Marjorie Scott made her children believe that their birth father was dead. MacKenzie Scott has been in jail for 13 years for a crime he never committed. Once again Marjorie visits her husband there and now tells him about Philips' marriage proposal. Mac doesn't want to stand in her way, as this marriage would mean financial security for his children as well, and keeps to himself that he has been pardoned. When Marjorie leaves prison, she hears the prison orchestra play a song that she likes very much. She learns from the director that it is from Mac.

After his release, Mac moves to Santa Rita because he wants at least a look at his children. When he hears his daughter playing an old piano that is out of tune, he offers her to tune it for the price of a song. Vickie is immediately drawn to Mac and agrees. So it comes that Mac accepts the offer of the fisherman Joe Borelli, who offers him accommodation and work. When Vickie receives a new piano from Philip for her birthday to replace her father's old piano, there are tears instead of joy. She receives a book of old Italian songs from Joe. When she visits him to thank him for it, she hears Mac playing her old piano. He tells her that he formed a small band with some musicians from the fish canning factory. Vickie is thrilled and would like to join in as a singer.

Marty has now attracted the interest of Lolita, a sexy young lady, with his new wealth. He ignores warnings from Joe and Mac about this. One day when Marjorie hears her daughter sing Mac's song, she figures it out and is sure he is in town. At a meeting he insists that she should marry Philip as he is planning to leave the city anyway. Marjorie then confesses the truth to Philip. When Vickie learns that Mac is her father, she wants to go with him. Marty is now in serious trouble because he is threatened with a knife by Lolita's friend Frank. Mac arrives and defends his son, causing him to miss the ship that was supposed to take him to San Diego . Believing that her father took the ship, Vickie takes Philips speedboat and pursues the ship despite a storm brewing. Here, too, Mac intervenes again and brings his daughter to safety. Now his family insists that he must not only stay but stay with them, and Philip also bows to Marjorie's decision. Shortly afterwards, the family learns that Mac and his band have won an audition, and everyone is very happy.

criticism

The Lexicon of International Films spoke of a "heartfelt tragicomedy enriched with sentimental music."

Bosley Crowther of the New York Times found Miss Warren to be a pleasant young lady, but a little too mature to go through for 15, and she also treated her voice carefully. The story of their debut starts out refreshingly, but then goes in a less credible direction. Walter Huston's performance was praised for playing his father with such ease and seriousness that the shortcomings of his fellow actors, especially those of Kay Francis and those of the script, would be even more noticeable if he was not in the picture .

Awards

1943 was Always in My Heart from the movie in the category "Best Song" for a Oscar nomination. The award went to Irving Berlin for his song White Christmas from the dance film Musik, Musik ( Holiday Inn ).
