Always in My Heart was written by Ernesto Lecuona (music) and Kim Gannon (text) as the title song for the film of the same name (German title Im Schatten des Herzens ) from 1942. It is sung several times in the film by Gloria Warren, who played the role of Victoria Scott. At her side starred Kay Francis as Marjorie Scott, her mother, and Walter Huston , as MacKenzie Scott, her father. During the film, Walter Huston also sings the song to his daughter, accompanying himself on the piano. Borrah Minevitch also played the harmonica with his group The Harmonica Rascals Always in My Heart as they roamed the streets and more and more people joined the train.
The song tells of the longing when someone you love is far away and of the fact that you always carry him with you in your heart (“always in my heart”) until you finally see each other again.
1943 was Always in My Heart in the category "Best Song" for a Oscar nomination. The award went to Irving Berlin for his song White Christmas from the dance film Musik, Musik ( Holiday Inn ).
Cover versions
Vera Lynn sang the song in the year it was released. Jane Froman sang Always in My Heart on the 1942 Radio Show at the Texaco Star Theater, accompanied by the Al Goodmann Orchestra. Dean Martin also included the song in his program. Pop singer Kitty Kallen also covered the song, as did Jimmy Dorsey and Dorothy Morrow. Al Stefano and his orchestra played the song on their album Rhumba Favorites (14049) , label: Goldene Tone. Other versions were recorded by Bert Ambrose and his orchestra, Teddy Randazzo, Artie Hill, Jerry Murads Harmonicats and Glenn Miller and his orchestra. Bobby Vinton recorded the song in 1962 and Jerry Vale covered it on his Columbia album Have You Looked Into Your Heart in 1964 . Béla Sander's 1965 dance record also contained the song. In a 1971 Filipino remake, Guy & Pip sing the title. Edmundo Ros covered Always in My Heart for his album Ros's Latin World and Xavier Cugat for his album The Original Latin Dance King . Carmen Cavallaro played him on the piano, Kenny Baker on his album Wartime Heart-throbs and Norrie Paramor and his orchestra recorded him for their album Programmed to Love (2000). The pianist Thomas Tirino, a patron of the music of the Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona , also included the song in his program.
The song is not to be confused with Tevin Campbell 's song of the same name.
Always in My Heart was in 1942 in the version of Jimmy Dorsey one week at number 16 on the US Billboard charts , in the version by Glenn Miller at number 10 for five weeks.
In the 100 Top Songs of 1942 , Always in My Heart in the version with Glenn Miller and his orchestra came in 73rd with 133 points (out of a possible 200).
The jazz discographer Tom Lord lists 20 cover versions of the title.
The song is not to be confused with Always in My Heart ( Forever On My Mind ) by Roy Turk (lyrics) and J. Fred Coots (music), which was published in 1932 and was recorded by Isham Jones , among others .
