Where the love leads (Original title: Where Love Has Gone ) is an American film drama by Edward Dmytryk from the year 1964 . The material is based on the novel of the same name by Harold Robbins . The title song Where Love Has Gone by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn was for both the Oscar and the Golden Globe nominated.

Luke Miller has become a respected hero through World War II and meets the beautiful Valerie Hayden. Her widowed mother, Mrs. Gerald Hayden, makes him an offer to marry her daughter and to get a managerial position in her company. However, Luke wants to achieve his goals independently of Mrs. Hayden and turns down the offer. Nevertheless, a love relationship develops between Luke and Valerie and the two get married. Then Luke returns to war.
Luke wants to work as an architect back home, but no bank wants to give him a loan for his projects. The influential Mrs. Hayden made sure of that. After Valerie becomes pregnant by Luke, he agrees to become vice president of Mrs. Hayden's company. Valerie earned a lot of recognition for her work as a sculptor, while Luke, unhappy with his situation, slowly fell into alcohol. Valerie is increasingly disgusted by her husband's behavior and begins several affairs. When she is caught red-handed by Luke , he files for divorce. Valerie gets custody of their daughter Danny.
Years go by and Danny grows up with her mother. One day, she kills Valerie's lover for attacking her mother. The court's verdict is manslaughter, and Mrs. Hayden seeks custody of Danny. Valerie doesn't want her daughter to grow up with her hated mother, however, and reveals that Danny actually wanted to kill her and that her lover was killed trying to defend her. Then Valerie goes home and commits suicide . Luke vows to himself that he will help his daughter start a new life and save her from her grandmother's influence.

Where love leads is based on a true story. On April 4, 1958, Cheryl Crane, daughter of Hollywood actress Lana Turner at the age of 14, stabbed Johnny Stompanato, her mother's lover, to death at her home. During the relationship between Stompanato and Turner, there are said to have been multiple outbreaks of violence; in an argument shortly before the crime, Stompanato threatened to kill Turner and her daughter. The subsequent process received a lot of media attention. In 1988 Crane wrote her take on it in her autobiography Detour: a Hollywood Tragedy - My Life With Lana Turner, My Mother .
