action

Zacharias Teller lives near Chamonix in the French Alps at the foot of Mont Blanc . The old mountain guide retired from his job after an accident. Since then, he and his much younger brother Chris have lived on some cattle farming in his father's house. Chris struggles with his bad career prospects and, unlike Zacharias, doesn't think too much of morals. One autumn night an Indian airliner had an accident on the mountain. The rescue team has to turn back halfway due to the approaching winter. Zacharias' best friend is killed.

Chris still wants to get up in secret to plunder the wreck. Zacharias, who cannot dissuade Chris, accompanies him. He knows that Chris lacks the necessary experience and will run to his doom if he lets him go alone. When they arrive at the wreckage of the plane after an arduous ascent, Chris pounces on the corpses to search them for valuables. Zacharias finds a young Indian girl who is the only one of the inmates still alive. Zacharias takes care of the girl and prepares her for transport. His brother, on the other hand, not only fears the additional burden, but also that the young woman would make her looted known. Once he even tries to kill her, which Zacharias is able to prevent.

During the descent, Chris had a fatal accident on an ice bridge over a ravine, and with him his prey fell into the ravine. Zacharias carries the girl down to the valley alone. When he arrives in the village, he is asked questions. The good-natured Zacharias wants to protect his brother's honor and not burden him. He claims the idea of the looting was his and that his brother saved the girl. However, since everyone in the village knows the true character of Zacharias and that of his brother, nobody believes him.

Reviews

  • film-dienst : Effective mountain drama, not always convincing, thanks to the acting performance of Spencer Tracy, however, respectable.

Remarks

The novel is based on the crash of a Lockheed L-749 Constellation with the aircraft name "Malabar Princess" of Air India on flight 245 on November 3, 1950 at the Mont Blanc pre-summit Rochers de la Tournette. All 48 people on board were killed in the crash. This event found several media processing and references, the first of which was the aforementioned novel by Henri Troyat and this film adaptation of the same.

Other media references include a .:

  • In the 2001 film “ The fabulous world of Amélie ”, the title character Amelie reads a newspaper report about mountain climbers who accidentally discover a mailbag on Mont Blanc and discover that it came from the “Malabar Princess” accident over 40 years ago . This headline moves her to make the lonely concierge of her house happy with a forged love letter from her missing husband, which was allegedly in this mailbag and could only be delivered to her after more than four decades.
  • The French feature film “Malabar Princess” from 2004 is about a boy whose mother disappeared in the French Alps while searching for the plane wreck of the “Malabar Princess” and who five years later goes in search of her.

Others

On January 24, 1966, another Air India plane crashed on Air India flight 101 - this time a Boeing 707-437 with the aircraft name "Kanchenjunga" - on Mont-Blanc, about 60 m below the summit. All 106 passengers and 11 crew members were killed and could not be recovered. At the time of the accident, it was the second most serious aircraft accident on French soil in terms of the number of fatalities.

Even decades after the two aircraft accidents, discoveries are still being made in the area of the Glacier des Bossons glacier , which flows down on the northern flank of Mont-Blanc , that come from these accidents:

  • In 1986 Christian Mollier, the then operator of the “Chalet du Glacier”, a managed mountain hut at the foot of the glacier at 1,425 m above sea level, found a wheel of the chassis of the “Malabar Princess” in front of the chalet on the glacier. The found wheel had been carried down the valley by the glacier for 36 years. It is now on display in the “Chalet du Glacier”.
  • On September 8, 2012, a mailbag with diplomatic mail from the Indian Foreign Ministry was recovered and passed on to the Indian Embassy in Paris, which could be assigned to Air India flight 101 from 1966 and thus reappeared more than 46 years after the accident.
  • In September 2013, a French climber found a small metal container engraved with Made in India on the glacier . This contained sapphires , rubies and emeralds worth several 100,000 euros, which had probably belonged to one of the passengers on Air India flight 101 and were intended for a recipient in London.
