Richard Arlen (born September 1, 1900 in Charlottesville , Virginia , † March 29, 1976 in Hollywood , California ; born Cornelius Richard Van Mattimore ) was an American actor who appeared in more than 150 productions.

Life

Prior to his career in the film business, Arlen served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Flying Corps during World War I. He played his first role in the 1921 film Ladies Must Live , but was not named in the credits. He appeared in numerous silent films, including three by the director William A. Wellman , but managed to be active as an actor even in the age of the sound film. Numerous B-films from the 1930s and 1940s show him as an action star of the time. In the 1950s and 1960s he also appeared on television several times.

Richard Arlen was married a total of three times. From the marriage with the actress Jobyna Ralston in the years 1927 to 1943 comes a son.

He is honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . After his death at the age of 75 from emphysema in 1976, Arlen is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in the Californian city of Culver City .
