Quarley Hill

The oval hill fort on the 52 meter high Quarley Hill dates from the Iron Age . The two-phase system is located north of Grateley in Hampshire in the hill country between the towns of Amesbury and Andover in England .

First of all, an enclosure was built, surrounded by a palisade . This was later supplemented by a two meter high wall and a four meter deep trench with a supported embankment (counterscarp). The wall and one of the entrances, which are located on the southwest and northeast side, remained unfinished. The formation of this and three other nearby Hillforts and their relationships to each other and to the radial, linear earthworks in their vicinity were investigated by Barry Cunliffe .
