Daniele Amfitheatrof , born Daniil Alexandrovich Amfiteatrow , Russian Даниил Александрович Амфитеатров (* 29. October 1901 in St. Petersburg , Russian Empire , † 7. June 1983 in Rome , Italy ) was a Russian-American composer , orchestra director and film composer , operating regularly since 1939 in American film.

Life

Amfitheatrof, son of the historian Alexander Amfiteatrow (1862–1938), had studied music at the Royal Conservatory of Rome and conducted symphonic orchestras in Prague , Rome, Budapest , Vienna and other European metropolises. Amfitheatrof was employed as artistic director of the broadcasters in Genoa and Trieste from 1929 to 1932. He then worked in Turin for five years , for the Radiotelevisione Italiana and at the Teatro di Torino. Since 1937 Daniele Amfitheatrof was also active in American opera houses (including Minneapolis and Boston ).

During a stay in Rome in 1934 Max Ophüls asked him to compose the film music for his comedy A Diva for All . This work was initially the only detour into the film industry, until Amfitheatrof devoted himself to film regularly since arriving in the USA. There he showed himself, a US citizen since 1944, as a capable composer of background music for dramatic and melodramatic Hollywood films. In many of his works up to 1943 he was not mentioned by name. Amfitheatrof was nominated for an Oscar in 1946 and 1948, respectively, for his work on His wife is my wife and Uncle Remus' Wonderland .
