action

Italy, 17th century. Giuseppe is a somewhat simple-minded and carefree young man. Despite his 20 years of age, his mother still sends him to school to look after him. While trying to work, he destroys Baron Marco's vines.

Giuseppe's mother manages to place her son in the Franciscan monastery to see her brother, Father Giovanni, who once baptized Giuseppe . There he comes under the care of Father Raspi and is sent with his confreres to beg. When Giuseppe is robbed, Father Raspi demands that he be sent away again, but Father Giovanni asks him to be patient with Giuseppe. Boppo, the hunchback, considers Giuseppe to be a favorite of his uncle Father Giovanni and makes it look as if Giuseppe had destroyed the Madonna figure in the monastery garden through his clumsiness.

Giuseppe returns home briefly because his father has died. When his mother learns that he should leave the monastery because of the incident with the statue, she vehemently advocates his return to the monastery. During the visitation by Bishop Durso, Giuseppe leaves a good impression after successfully accompanying the difficult birth of two lambs. The bishop is even more impressed - after a lecture by Brother Orlando about the Trinity - by Giuseppe's ability to explain it in simple words. The bishop encourages Giuseppe to become a priest. Father Raspi doubts the bishop's assessment.

Brother Orlando is assigned to teach Giuseppe, but is desperate about the task. Giuseppe confesses to his uncle that he would rather look after the animals in the stable, but Father Giovanni promises him that Giuseppe will always have a place in the monastery. But Giuseppe passed the test in Brindisi because, of all things, his favorite chapter from the Gospel of Luke was asked. Brother Orlando, on the other hand, is less fortunate.

Despite his longing to return to the stable, Giuseppe is encouraged by his uncle to study further. Goppo, on the other hand, is annoyed because he has to take over Giuseppe's work in the stable. A year later in Naples, Durso, in his new role as Archbishop, lets Giuseppe pass without an examination and says that he has already examined Giuseppe.

When Giuseppe returns home, his mother initially cannot believe that he has become a priest, but is then all the happier. The villagers also respond with joy. As he prays to the Virgin Mary , he suddenly begins to float . Goppo, who witnessed the event, found no faith in his confreres. During Giuseppe's first mass, Giovanni and Raspi have to fend off an onslaught of villagers who want to see more of Giuseppe's miracles, and do not notice how Giuseppe hovers one more time during the service.

During the official investigation into the incident, Father Raspi accused Giuseppe of being possessed by the devil. After the exorcism carried out by Father Raspi , Giuseppe, although chained, begins to float again. On July 16, 1767 Giuseppe was appointed by Pope Clement XIII. canonized .

Reviews

“An imprecise and misleading attempt to trace the life of the mystic Joseph von Copertino, canonized in 1767 - from village idiot to controversial Franciscan priest - in a few episodes. Staged by Dmytryk (a hilarious and heart-winning material ") in own production, but only convincing in the first part."
