Curt Lowens , also Kurt Lowens , born Kurt Löwenstein , (born November 17, 1925 in Allenstein , Prussia , German Empire ; † May 8, 2017 ) was a German actor and a survivor of the Holocaust . Since 1960 he starred in more than 100 films.

Life

Lowens was born into a Jewish family in the East Prussian town of Allenstein (now Olsztyn, Poland ). His father, Alfred Loewenstein, was a respected attorney whose law firm collapsed after the Nazis came to power due to the law on admission to the bar . The family moved to Berlin in 1936 but later decided to leave Germany for the United States . While they were waiting in Rotterdam to leave, the Germans attacked Holland . In June 1943 the family was brought to Westerbork and was supposed to be deported from there to Auschwitz , when their father's relationships set them free. After his release, he went underground and became an active member of the Resistance under the false name of Ben Joosten . In 1947 he immigrated to the United States with his father and stepmother, where he became an actor. He played German Nazis very often in the following years.
