The Wiener Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) was a Viennese daily newspaper of a liberal direction that appeared from March 1, 1880 to February 11, 1934 . It was founded by Theodor Hertzka , who led it as editor until 1886; Julius Szeps served as editor-in-chief for many years from 1899 to 1909 and the social democrat Paul Deutsch from 1927 to 1934 . Jakob Julius David , Milan Dubrović , scriptwriter Paul Frank , Géza Herczeg , Robert Hirschfeld , Max Kalbeck , Ignaz von Kolisch , Carl Lafite , Emil Marriot , Alfred Polgar , Richard Specht , Elisabeth Thury , Berta Zuckerkandl-Szeps wrote for WAZ and the music critic Gustav Dömpke . Hugo von Hofmannsthal published early poetry in the daily newspaper, for example his love poem "The Two" in the December 25, 1896 edition.

The title addition was initially “six o'clock”, later “late evening paper”. The mode of publication changed. The Wiener Allgemeine Zeitung was published as a morning paper, a midday paper and a six o'clock evening paper until December 20, 1888 , after which it was published every weekday evening. In the course of its existence, the newspaper changed the format several times. They originally appeared in the format 41 × 26.4 cm, but in 1915 they changed to 41 × 28 cm.

In the wake of the February uprising in 1934, the Wiener Allgemeine Zeitung had to cease publication.
