content

Author Charles Regnier returned to Paris in 1896. He has had an exotic journey. He also wrote a bestseller that the Justice Department wanted to banned. That same night an officer is murdered at night: the victim was torn to pieces. The police prefect suspects a monster behind the crime, a kind of wascat . However, Inspector Severen does not believe in theory, he suspects Regnier. He himself has hallucinations and is not sure whether he is - unconsciously - behind the murder. Another murder occurs and when Regnier's lover Marie Audet is chased through the park at night, the police shoot the pursuer. It turns out that it was an acquaintance of Regniers who, through magic, was able to transform himself into a werecat. As he dies, he admits that he had purposely turned into the monster - the method he had taken from Regnier's book - in order to get revenge on various people.

reception

Hal Erickson of the New York Times gave the film a negative rating. It is "stylish, but for pedestrians" (meaning: boring). Allmovie praised the action scene, but criticized the sluggish plot and the lack of atmosphere and tension. Brett Gallman of Oh, the Horror! praised the film. He got a lot out of his low budget.
