Hot border (original title: The Wonderful Country ) is an American western directed by Robert Parrish from 1959. The film with Robert Mitchum in the leading role is based on the 1952 novel The Wonderful Country by Tom Lea .
action
Gunslinger Martin Brady fled the United States to Mexico many years ago after killing his father's killer. He works on behalf of the powerful Castro brothers Cipriano and Marcos, one of whom is a governor and the other a general. Somewhat reluctantly, he returns to his home country on her behalf to buy weapons in Texas. Brady's short stay is extended when he breaks his leg in an accident. From then on, he had to be looked after for several weeks in the shop of the German-born arms seller Sterner, with Sterner's nephew Ludwig looking after him in a friendly manner. Brady also soon spots Helen, the wife of local Major Colton. She is bored with her marriage and openly flirts with Brady. The major also asks Brady whether a joint cooperation with the Castros against the Apaches - who repeatedly make the border country unsafe and then withdraw into Mexico - is possible.
Brady likes life in the United States and he wonders if he could not stay in the United States - especially since his gun load was stolen while he was sick, which is likely to piss the Castros off. The friendly ranger- captain Rucker, who knows Brady's life story, offers him a position in his unit. But then Brady kills a man at a party who killed Ludwig in an argument and then aimed his rifle at Brady. Since he assumes that he will not be believed, Brady escapes across the Mexican border and reports back to the Castros. Cipriano is forgiving of the stolen weapons and takes him back as a bodyguard.
Some time later, Major Colton and his wife travel to Mexico to negotiate a joint action against the Apaches with the Castros. Ellen and Brady have a brief affair. Meanwhile, Cipriano orders Brady to kill his brother Marcos, because he himself wants to become governor and to kill him. Brady has no choice but to accept the murder assignment as he is still indebted to the governor for the stolen weapons under Mexican law. Brady doesn't want to kill anyone anymore and fled to the Mexican countryside. After a few weeks with the Mexican farmer Santos, he meets African American members of Major Colton's company. Colton is seriously injured after a fight with the Apaches, but does not allow himself any rest or medical help as he wants to continue his company. Together with Brady, his people can defeat the last of the Apaches who flee, but the major dies shortly afterwards of his injuries.
General Marcos has since eliminated his brother and has been appointed the new governor. He orders the American armies to leave Mexico within a short time and demands the extradition of Brady, who is hostile to him. Captain Rucker advises Brady to return to the USA, where his chances at a trial would be good, as the shooting of Ludwig's murderer would have been self-defense according to the witnesses . Helen is also ready to continue her romance with him, but only if he returns to the United States. Brady finally manages to escape from the general's men in the USA, but his magnificent Andalusian horse, a gift from the Castros, dies shortly before the border.
background
The novel The Wonderful Country by Texan Tom Lea (1907-2001) was a success after its publication in 1952 and Parrish asked the author if he could make a film. Lea can be seen in a cameo as a hairdresser shaving Mitchum's beard. The majority of the film was shot in the Mexican region of Durango .
Mitchum was the third choice for the role of Martin Brady after Henry Fonda and Gregory Peck had previously turned them down. Mitchum also co-produced the film with his own production company DRM Production . Julie London, also known as the singer, was engaged in the female lead, who later recalled that most of her scenes were cut. Satchel Paige , a legendary baseball player, can be seen in a supporting role as an African-American cavalry soldier.

criticism
Hot Frontier received mixed reviews, but it contains one of Mitchum's best acting performances in the opinion of some critics. Like John Wayne in The Black Falcon, he plays a melancholy western hero who has split off from ordinary society.
Prisma writes: "The interesting western from the ordinary commercial director Robert Parrish ( Accident in Space ) shows Robert Mitchum in a role that is typical for him, even if he is not a villain." Cinema wrote that the film contains "complex characters, wonderful images". The lexicon of international film judged less enthusiastically, but still benevolently: “Well-done average Westerner with beautiful color photos. With his presence, Robert Mitchum saves the rather banal plot, which otherwise lives from a little romantic adventure from the pioneering days. "
