action
London during World War II . The American Jody Norris learns at a train station in London that the pilot Gregory Piersen is supposed to arrive on one of the trains. She now remembers the summer of 1918 at the end of the First World War . Jody is swarmed by Alex Piersen, but rejects him. After a night of love with the young soldier Bart Cosgrove, Jody is pregnant. A doctor advises her to abort the child for health reasons. However, when she learns that Bart Cosgrove died in the war, she decides to carry the child to term. Her son is secretly born. The nurse Daisy Gingras gives the child to a neighbor so that there is no scandal in her small hometown. This neighbor, however, passes the child on to Corinne Piersen, who is now married to Alex Piersen and had just lost her own child. The boy is named Gregory. Jody now regularly visits her son at the Piersens' friends. When she asks Corinne to work as his tutor for the Piersens, Corinne refuses this request. Jody then proves to her that Gregory is actually her son. Corinne does not want to give up the adopted son, however, because she fears that she will lose her husband Alex to Jody. Alex is still in love with Jody.
Jody moves to New York and opens a company with her boyfriend Mac Tilton. Mac Tilton also wants to marry Jody. But she also rejects him. When Jody learns that Alex and Corinne Piersen are almost broke, Jody blackmailed Corinne. Should she give her Gregory back, she would borrow her money. Gregory eventually comes to Jody. But after only a short time, Gregory felt homesick for the Piersens, not knowing that he was now living with his real mother. Gregory eventually returns to the Piersens. Jody leaves New York for London ...
At the train station in London, Jody finally meets the grown-up Gregory, who wants to marry his girlfriend Liz Lorimer. She and her admirer, Lord Desham, are very helpful to the young couple. During the wedding, Gregory realizes who Jody Norris actually is based on some remarks from the Lord and his young wife. He asks his mother to dance ("I think this is our dance, mother.").
