Roland Culver
Roland Joseph Culver (born August 21, 1900 in London , † March 1, 1984 in Henley-on-Thames , Oxfordshire , England ) was a British theater and film actor .
Life
Roland Culver attended Highgate College and was a pilot in the Royal Air Force from 1918 to 1919 . After his military service, he trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art . He made his debut at the Hull Repertory Theater in 1924 and appeared in British films from 1931. He was mostly seen as a typically English gentleman . In 1946 he gave as Lord Desham in mother's heart ( To Each His Own ) next to Olivia de Havilland his Hollywood debut. In 1947 he played the sky guardian Mr. Jordan in the Rita Hayworth musical A Goddess on Earth ( Down to Earth ). In Billy Wilder's I kiss your hand, Madame ( The Emperor Waltz ) he embodied a nobleman again as Baron Holenia in 1948. From 1956 he was also seen on television, including in the series With Umbrella, Charm and Melon ( The Avengers , 1968). However, he continued to perform on stage. In 1966 he was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actor for the Broadway production of Chekhov's play Ivanov . In 1979 he published his autobiography under the title Not Quite a Gentleman . He retired four years later.
From 1932 to 1946, Culver was married to actress and casting agent Daphne Rye. The marriage resulted in two sons, Robin and Michael Culver , who followed in their parents' footsteps and also became actors. In 1947, Culver married Nan Hopkins. The marriage lasted until his death. Roland Culver died of a heart attack in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, in 1984 at the age of 83.
