Life

Victoria Horne was born in New York City, but grew up in the New Jersey countryside. Riding was one of her passions. She studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and spent a year in England on the Shakespeare stages in Stratford-upon-Avon . Back in New York, the tall blonde starred in a number of plays in the 1930s, including two productions on Broadway . She made her film debut in 1944 in the film noir Witness Wanted . Her best-known role is James Stewart's scheming niece Myrtle Mae in the classic film My Friend Harvey (1950). Most of the time, the character actress was committed to comical supporting roles, which were often not mentioned in the credits. In 1953 Horne retired from acting after around 50 films, only for the western Hot Frontier she returned briefly in 1959 in a small role in front of the camera.

Victoria Horne was married to actor and comedian Jack Oakie from 1950 until his death in 1978 . They lived on "Oakridge", their huge estate in Northridge . In 2001 she published the biography Life with Jack Oakie: Anecdotes . Victoria Horne is not - as is often falsely claimed - the daughter of director James W. Horne (1881–1942), whom she claims to have never met. Her younger step-siblings June Horne (1917-1993) and James Horne Jr. (1917-2008) also worked as actors. Victoria Horne died of natural causes in 2003 at the age of 91.
