James W. Horne (1914)

James Wesley Horne (born December 14, 1881 in San Francisco , California - † June 29, 1942 in Los Angeles , California) was an American film director, screenwriter and actor.

life and career

James W. Horne began his career as a stage actor. In 1913 he came to Hollywood as an actor for the films by director Sidney Olcott . As early as 1915 Horne himself worked as a screenwriter and director for numerous silent films , and he ended his acting career soon after. Until the year of his death, the experienced director staged a total of over 60 feature films and over 170 short films as a director.

From the mid-1920s he established himself as an expert on slapstick comedies. Most famous today are his numerous films that he directed with the comedian duo Laurel and Hardy . Among other things, he directed the short film The Big Business (1929) and the western comedy Zwei ritten nach Texas (1937), these two works are now among the most renowned and well-known films by Laurel and Hardy. In Buster Keaton's silent comedy The Musterschüler (1927), Horne was also responsible for directing. From the late 1930s onwards, he shot a number of film series , most of which were now thrillers or westerns, but which he nonetheless repeatedly incorporated elements of slapstick. Until his death, Horne remained a busy director.

James Horne died of a cerebral haemorrhage in 1942 at the age of 60. He was married to his wife, actress Cleo Ridgely, from 1916 until his death. They had two daughters. In the 2018 film Stan & Ollie , Horne is played by Joseph Balderrama.
