The Lady on the Shoulder or Die Mustergatten is an American short film comedy by James W. Horne from 1931 with the comedian duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in the leading roles.

action

Ollie is a politician and is running for mayor. The success of his election campaign, however, is seriously jeopardized: a former lover of Ollie turns up unexpectedly in his office. She has a spicy photo of Ollie and herself from earlier years and threatens to publish the photo in the newspaper - unless Ollie donates her money. To put the matter out of the world, Ollie wants to meet the blackmailer in her apartment that evening. On the same evening, however, Ollie's wife invited some high-ranking guests to a celebration in her home, whom Ollie really wants to get excited about as mayor. That's why his friend and assistant Stan is supposed to visit the blackmailer in his place in the evening in order to stop her until he comes across it later.

The blackmailer gets angry when Stan appears in her apartment instead of Ollie. She wants to get to Ollie's house to compromise him there . Stan tries to stop the blackmailer by all means, whereupon a real battle breaks out between the two. In the course of the evening Ollie receives regular calls from the two of them, which causes some disturbances and irritations at his party. Ollie's wife also suspects that he is hiding something from her. Meanwhile, there is a fight on the street between Stan and the blackmailer, which an older, man-hating friend of Stan's wife observes and believes that Stan is sexually harassing the blackmailer. The friend informs Mrs. Laurel about the incident, who is furious and goes in search of her husband with an ax.

After Ollie's guests have said goodbye, the angry blackmailer arrives at the house with Stan. Ollie can hardly introduce her to his suspicious wife as Mrs. Laurel. When Ollie threatens the blackmailer in a conversation to kill her and fires a shot as a warning, she faints from shock. To escape Mrs. Hardy, Stan and Ollie want to get out of the house in disguise with the unconscious blackmailer, taking her on their shoulders. When Mrs. Laurel arrives at the house, Stan's and Ollie's disguise collapses. They flee quickly, followed by Mrs. Laurel with her ax.

backgrounds

Chickens Come Home is the remake of the silent film Love 'Em and Weep with Laurel and Hardy from 1927. James Finlayson, who played Ollies Butler in a supporting role, played Hardy's role in the original, while Hardy was the judge, one of his guests, in the original film , played in a supporting role. Stan Laurel and Mae Busch as blackmailer kept their roles at the time. When Love 'Em and Weep was filmed, Finlayson, Laurel and Hardy still appeared as a trio of comedians, which explains why Finlayson actually played the leading role in the original version.

The film was shot in the Hal Roach studios between December 30, 1930 and January 10, 1931 . The film appeared in American cinemas on February 21, 1931. In addition to the English version, there is also a Spanish version of the film, which is significantly longer at 56 minutes. In it, Laurel and Hardy and James Finlayson play their roles again as butlers with broken Spanish, while the other roles are filled with Spanish-speaking actors. In this version, the magician and vaudeville artist Hadji Ali has a guest appearance as an artist at Ollie's celebration.

German version

The film appeared for the first time under the title Dick und Doof: Die Mustergatten . The version was created by the IFU in Remagen . The dialogue book was written by Fritz Benscher and Manfred R. Köhler , the latter also directing the dialogue. Stan Laurel was voiced by Walter Bluhm , Oliver Hardy by Hermann Pfeiffer . It is the only dubbed version of this film that was also released on DVD.
