action

Titus Tillsbury is a successful businessman. His life turns out of joint, however, when suddenly a friend from bygone days shows up and wants to expose him with the help of a photo if he does not comply with her demands. They set up a meeting for 7 p.m. in a café. Unfortunately, at exactly the same time, Mrs. Tillsbury arranged dinner at her house with an acquaintance of Judge Chigger and his wife. So it happens that Mr. Tillsbury calls in his attorney Romaine Ricketts and demands that he keep his former girlfriend in check until he can move away from the evening meeting. This does not go well for long, however, because Tillsbury's girlfriend does not allow herself to be distracted by Mr. Ricketts and plans to storm Titus Tillsbury's house on the spot. So it happens that Ricketts has to pass her off as his wife in order not to cause a stir. At the beginning everything goes well, until Rickett's wife learns from the local gossip that her husband has been spotted with a strange woman. Mrs. Ricketts immediately goes to the house and immediately sees her husband, who tries to pull away with Tillsbury's girlfriend in a deception maneuver. Now both wives notice the fraud and begin to chase their husbands away.

Background and trivia

Love 'Em And Weep was written mainly between November 26th and December 7th, 1926, in January 1927 a few retakes were made. Filming locations were South Catalina, Wilshire (in Los Angeles), and Hal Roach Studios in Culver City.

The film was first shown in Germany in 1962 as “ The Sweet Secret ” in the series “ It is allowed to laugh ”. In addition, the later series " Dick and Doof " and " Zwei Herren dick und stupid " contained shortened and dubbed versions under the titles " Besudelte Ehre " (1971) and " Peggy Pimpernell " (1975).

Love 'Em And Weep served as a template for the 1931 Laurel and Hardy short film Chickens Come Home , in which Mae Busch also played the role of the past lover. But individual components of the film were also used again later, such as the two-story lady in Sugar Daddies , which premiered six months later, or the blackmail, which can also be seen in Come Clean (1931).
