Frederick Lawrence Guiol , also Fred L. Guiol (born February 17, 1898 in San Francisco , California , † May 23, 1964 in Bishop , California) was an American screenwriter , cameraman , film director and film producer .

Live and act

Guiol attended private schools in Mexico before returning to the United States. He began his film career at the age of almost 20 as a prop boy for DW Griffith's propaganda film Hearts of the World (1917/18). In 1919 he was shown as a cameraman in two short films , in 1921 Guiol found employment at Hal Roach's production company and was employed in pretty much every imaginable position, including as a small actor. Also on Harold Lloyd's comedy classic Skyscraper of all things! the Californian was involved in the (technical team).

In the same year 1923 Roach gave him the first opportunity to work as a short film director. With Battling Orioles , Fred Guiol was also able to make a (60-minute) feature film in 1924. His productions also include some early works by the comedian duo Laurel & Hardy . Since the beginning of the sound film era, Fred Guiol shifted his field of activity more and more towards screenwriting. After 1936 he hardly ever staged. Like his directorial work, his script contributions hardly got beyond the B format. Only his last work, the James Dean classic giants, stands out from the mediocre. For this achievement, Fred Guiol received an Oscar nomination in 1957 . After that, he no longer appeared on film.

Fred Guiol was also a regular producer of films in the 1940s.
