Do Detectives Think? (German film title: Die Rache des Raubmorders / Do detectives use their heads? / The meat knife on the throat ) is an American silent short film comedy directed by Fred Guiol from 1927 . The comedian duo Laurel and Hardy plays the leading roles .

action

The so-called "Tipton Slasher" is sentenced to death by hanging for murder. However, he swears to Judge Foozle, who conducted his trial, to break out of prison and then murder him. In fact, the Tipton Slasher breaks out a little later, causing Judge Foozle to panic. The judge calls a detective agency that sends his least talented employees to him: Ferdinand Finklebery, the second worst detective in the world, and Sherlock Pinkham, the worst detective in the world and alleged relative of William Tell . After the two fearful detectives have wasted a lot of time in a cemetery on the way with the loss of their hats, they finally arrive at the judge's property, where he lives with his much younger wife.

In the meantime, however, the Tipton Slasher is already in the house: He attacked the real butler of the Foozles, who would have had his first day at work today, and is now posing as that. Ferdinand and Sherlock find the butler, who wishes them good night and a long sleep, very friendly at first, before they discover his photo in the newspaper and identify him as a Tipton Slasher. Meanwhile, he hunts the judge who is sitting in the bathtub with his knife. A wild chase ensues, at the end of which Ferdinand can lock the Tipton Slasher in the closet with the wrong weapon. In the closet, however, Sherlock Pinkham had been hiding fearfully, who is now getting black eyes from the Tipton Slasher. While the police appear and take the Tipton Slasher away, Sherlock gives his colleague Ferdinand blue eyes to compensate.

background

Do Detectives Think? was shot at Hal Roach Studios between April 25 and May 6, 1927 and was released in theaters on November 20, 1927. The film was made in the early and developmental stages of the comedian duo, when their trademarks were still developing, and is often considered one of the first "real" Laurel and Hardy films. In this film they wear their famous bowler hats in different sizes for the first time , which they swap with each other several times during the course of the film. Instead of their real first names, however, they still have the strange names Ferdinand Finkleberry and Sherlock Pinkham .

The Canadian musician Nash the Slash was inspired for his stage name by the figure of the Tipton Slasher.
