Sugar Daddies is an American silent film comedy from 1927 with the later comedian duo Laurel and Hardy in the supporting roles. The film premiered on September 10, 1927 and was most likely the first film starring Laurel and Hardy to reach Germany before World War II. A so-called “ sugar daddy ” is a glossing over term for men who usually have a sexual, long-term relationship with significantly younger partners, who receive material compensation in return.

action

The filthy rich Cyrus Brittle wakes up one morning and is told of negative news by his butler. According to one lady, she has been Cyrus Brittle's wife since last night, who, according to her information, was married to him in a lion cage in the circus. Since Mr. Brittle cannot remember anything, he hopes for a peaceful discussion with the alleged Mrs. Bittle. But she wants to make big money out of this move and extort $ 50,000 from Cyrus, otherwise she would go to the registry office. After all the discussion fails, Mr. Brittle's lawyer advises him to flee from Mrs. Brittle and her abusive brother, which they do immediately. However, they are quickly tracked down by their pursuers in their hotel on the beach, resulting in a wild chase that extends from the hotel to the public streets to an amusement park, where all users of a slide are stuck in the catchment area at the end of the film.

Background and trivia

Sugar Daddies was filmed at Hal Roach Studios in Culver City in May and June 1927, and some scenes in Long Beach , Los Angeles County . In Germany, the Berlin Film Inspectorate was commissioned to set the age limit for the film. Apparently due to the thorny subjects of blackmail and past love affairs, Sugar Daddies has been found to be adult. The German premiere took place on September 27, 1927 under the title "The bride from the bar". Other titles of the film on German television were "Eine Schöne Bescherung" (1965), "Between Bestien und Banditen" (1970), "Lustgreise" (1974), and "Der Millionär unter dem Rock" (1975).
