With Love And Hisses (dt. With love and hissing ) is a silent film in which the later comic duo Laurel and Hardy appeared together in the lead roles. The short film had its premiere on August 28, 1927 in Los Angeles .
action
Cuthbert Hope is a stupid soldier who has to go to the army. Together with many other soldiers, the train drives to the intended camp. On the very first day, General Bustle despaired of Cuthbert Hope's ineptitude and was all the more relieved when the NCO set off on a baggage march with Hope and a few other soldiers. After a long hike through the hot landscape, the recruits find a lake in which they can bathe while Cuthbert Hope is supposed to take care of the uniforms. After a while of supervision, however, he disregards the order and also goes into the water. A discarded cigarette Banners ignites the pile of clothes, so that the recruits have to run back to the camp half-naked. On the way there, they hide behind a billboard and are first followed by a skunk and finally by a swarm of bees, which ultimately causes unrest throughout the camp. The final sequence shows how the recruits have to go back to work with their bottoms swollen from the bee stings.
background
With Love And Hisses is the seventh film in which Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy appeared together. The shooting took place in March 1927. At the time, the comedians were not yet an official team, but they were often shown together in a film in the lead roles, as both were under contract with Hal Roach. However, many of these films did not find their way into German cinemas in the 1920s, although it is not known whether later films of this time were shown by the German film distributor UFA .
With Love And Hisses was published a total of six times in the German-speaking area, each time under a different title. First broadcast on ARD in 1964 under the title “Greetings and Shots”, broadcasts followed in 1965 and 1966 at DFF , once as part of the Laughing Parade and under the title “Tired Heroes”. The short film was also shown in 1971 as “Destiny in Uniform”, in 1976 as “Cheese with Garlic” and in 1998 as “For the Military”. The film appeared under its original title on Kinowelt's German DVD for sale .
Others
- With Love And Hisses has some elements that were reused in later Laurel and Hardy films. Among them, for example, the drill in the camp in The Devil's Brothers (1932) or the swarm of bees in We Are from the Scottish Infantry Regiment (1935).
- The billboard behind which the half-naked soldiers hide on their way to the camp is from the silent film drama Der Wolgaschiffer (1926).
