Nyan Cat

Nyan Cat (literally: "Meow Cat"), also known as Pop-Tart Cat or rainbow-cat, is an Internet phenomenon and part of network culture . It designates one of 12 frames existing 8-bit - GIF animation of a flying cat with a body of a cherry Pop-Tart is, and what a rainbow leaves behind, and in the background a remix of the song "Nyanyanyanyanyanyanyan!" is played.

origin

The original animation was created by Christopher Torres (PRguitarman) on April 2nd, 2011. He then posted it on the LOL Comics website (address: prguitarman.com) because he found the animation cute. YouTube user saraj00n combined the animation of the cat with the version of the song Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya! by Nico-Nico-Douga user Momo Momo ( も も も も ) and uploaded it to YouTube on April 5, 2011. Nico Nico Douga user Momo Momo uploaded his / her version of the song Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya! to Nico Nico Douga on January 31, 2011.

Momo Momo created his version of the song with the synthetic voice Momone Momo ( 桃 音 モ モ ) of the synthesizer program UTAU . The name is derived from momo ( peach ) and ne ( sound , noise ). The source of the voice used to create Momone Momo was the Japanese Fujimoto Momoko ( 藤 本 萌 々 子 ), Momone Momo was created in February 2009. The original version of Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya! , created with the program Vocaloid / Hatsune Miku , was uploaded to Nico Nico Douga on July 25, 2010 by user daniwellP . The lyrics refer to the Japanese sound the cat makes, which sounds like nyā ( に ゃ あ ).

Nyan Cat's fame rose after it was reported on April 15 on the Tosh.0 blog . In October 2011, the YouTube video already had over 39 million hits. Due to its popularity, many new remixes and cover versions were created, some of which lasted several hours, and an app for iPhone , iPad , Android , HP webOS and Windows Phone 7 was programmed.

On June 27, 2011, the video was removed for copyright reasons, following a complaint by a person claiming to be PRguitarman who holds the copyright of the Nyan-Cat GIF file. The video was no longer available. In response, Christopher Torres posted a statement on his LOL comics page, in which he made it clear that the complaint did not come from him. He also contacted Saraj00n and Daniwell, who own the copyright of the video and song. Together they filed a counter-complaint on YouTube, whereupon the video was made public again. The video was restored on June 28, 2011; however, PRguitarman had in the meantime received both hate mail and death threats for the DMCA complaint allegedly originating from him.

On the “Non-Stop-Nyan-Cat” -page you can see the flying Pop-Tart-Cat leaving a rainbow as usual; in the background the Nyanyanyanya song runs in an endless loop. On a counter the time can be read off how long one has been listening to the "song". It is possible to tweet this score in order to compete with others. At their federal party congress in Neumünster in April 2012 , the Pirate Party officially decided to play this animation for up to 1337 seconds (22 minutes and 17 seconds) during the counting breaks in elections .

The LulzSec hacker group also uses the Nyan Cat. When they attacked the PBS website , they left a picture of the cat.

Games

Due to its popularity, some online games have been developed around the Nyan Cat. Chris Torres (PRguitarman) developed his own game under the name Nyan Cat for iOS. This became the first official game.
