action

Dona St. Columb lived in London in 1668 with her husband Harry. Dona is bored of the city, and Harry's friend Lord Rockingham is increasingly harassing her. She takes her two children and moves to the family's country estate on the Cornish coast. To her surprise, she only finds servant William there. The neighbor, Lord Godolphin, warns you of pirates who are making the coast unsafe and raiding the country estates there. Dona is more amused than alarmed at the thought.

One day a ship, the La Mouette , is anchored on Dona's coastline. French pirates kidnap Dona and bring him onto the ship. Dona is excited by the adventure and invites the captain, who is only called Frenchman, to her house for dinner. She knows that Lord Godolphin set up a vigilante group to drive away the pirates. The captain invites Dona to go with him. She agrees and leaves her children in William's care.

Dona wears men's clothing on board. She actively helps in an attack on a French schooner that has loaded goods from Godolphin's cousin. Dona and the captain begin to fall in love. When Frenchman lets her go home, she discovers that her husband and Lord Rockingham have come to help Godolphin. William has covered her absence and said she was sick and could not have visitors. Dona assigns William to warn the pirates and urge them to leave immediately. William is shot in the arm by the vigilante on the way to the ship, but is able to deliver the message. Back at the house, he tells Dona that the ship won't be able to sail until midnight.

The vigilante groups gather in the country estate that evening. The pirates come ashore and take the whole society hostage. Rockingham is suspicious when he sees the friendliness of Dona and Frenchman. The captain says goodbye to Dona, the pirates are getting ready to return to the ship. The jealous Rockingham attacks the captain, who kills him in self-defense. The vigilante group is now attacking the pirates. Frenchman offers himself as a prisoner if his men are allowed to leave. The ship is close to the bank so that Dona can help the captain escape. She weighs up whether to follow him or stay with her family. She decides in favor of her family, Frenchman has sails set, the ship continues.

background

This Paramount Pictures production was one of 700 productions shot between 1929 and 1949, the television rights of which were sold to Universal Pictures in 1958 .

This is the only film in which Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce not as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson occur. Hollywood became aware of the Mexican star Arturo de Córdova. However, he could not gain a foothold in the USA, where he played his third role in the USA, and returned to his homeland after the shooting was over. After that he only appeared sporadically as a Latin lover in some B-films in Hollywood. For Ralph Forbes, who died in 1951, it was the penultimate role in a movie.

The Oscar winners Hans Dreier and Ernst Fegté were born Germans. The Bremer Dreier (1885–1966) came to Hollywood in 1926 and worked on over 500 films during his career. Fegté (1900–1976) came from Hamburg and was employed in Hollywood even before Dreier. Two-time Oscar winner Gordon Jennings took care of the special effects, while his former partner Farciot Edouard worked as a camera technician on this film. Oscar winner Leo Shuken was hired as orchestra leader . The coach for the fencing scenes was the fencer Aldo Nadi , who won three gold and one silver medal at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp .
