Josef Rodenstock (born April 11, 1846 in Ershausen ; † February 18, 1932 in Erl ) was a German industrialist and founder of the Rodenstock company .

At the age of 14, the son of the merchant and businessman Georg Rodenstock began trading in sewing needles, buttons, self-made barometers, metal tachometers for beer wort and glasses frames in the Rhineland . His father took over the dispatch from Ershausen, his brothers Alois and Michael the travel activities.

In 1877, together with his brother Michael, he founded the precision engineering workshop named after his father in Würzburg , G. Rodenstock . On January 1, 1878, the company started operations. The new company sold math, physics, and optical equipment, especially glasses . Even before this time, Rodenstock had developed its low-reflex diaphragm glasses and a spectacle measuring device, which made a decisive contribution to the later success of his company.

In 1882 he opened a branch in Munich and in 1883 relocated the company headquarters to the place where production had been carried out since 1884. In 1898 he opened another plant in Regen . His products became known and valued for their high quality through sales outlets throughout Germany and abroad.

Rodenstock, who lived modestly despite his business success, married Maria Schmöger in 1880 and had three sons and six daughters with her. From 1905 his son Alexander Rodenstock worked in the company management. In 1919 he finally left the management of the company to his son and withdrew to his estate near Kufstein with a fortune of 3.5 million gold marks .

Josef Rodenstock was the court optician of the German emperor.
