life and career

De Córdova first studied at the Cavin of University of Lausanne (Switzerland) and then worked in a managerial position at the Chilean branch of the US news agency United Press in Santiago de Chile . Back home in Mexico, de Córdova found work at the XEZ radio station in Mérida before he decided to change his profession and became an actor.

Arturo de Córdova made his film debut in his native Mexico in 1936 and rose to a film star in his home country within a few years. In 1942 he played the title role in a lesser-known film adaptation of the literary classic The Count of Monte Christo . In 1943 he signed a studio contract in Hollywood with Paramount Pictures , who tried to market him as a southern lover in the tradition of Rudolph Valentino . In the award-winning Hemingway film When the Hour Ticks , he was given the important supporting role of the sometimes careless but kind-hearted fighter Agustín alongside Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman . He then played other leading roles, for example alongside Joan Fontaine as a pirate captain in the adventure flick The Pirate and the Lady (1944) and in the comedy A Medal for Benny (1945) with Dorothy Lamour . However, he was unable to establish himself permanently in Hollywood and returned to Mexico after his leading role in Arthur Lubin's musical film New Orleans (1947).

In Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, however, De Córdova was a popular film star until the 1960s. He worked particularly frequently with the director Roberto Gavaldón . He was awarded the Premio Ariel , the most important Mexican film award, in the category of best leading actor in 1952, 1954 and 1958. He played his internationally best-known role in a Mexican film in 1952 in the drama Er by Luis Buñuel . In this film, De Córdova played a rich and strictly Catholic Mexican who tyrannized his wife with outbursts of anger and religious fantasies after his marriage. In 1966 he stood in front of the camera for the first time and once for a television production with the miniseries Aprendiendo a Vivir . He played his last role in 1971 in the comedy El profe on the side of Cantinflas . Arturo de Córdova's oeuvre encompasses more than 100 films.

The actor was married to his colleague Marga López in his second marriage since 1964 . He died of a stroke in November 1973 at the age of 65.
