The Black Majesty is an American drama directed by Mitchell Leisen . The film was released on March 30, 1934 in the United States . When it was shown in Austria that same year, the film was also shown for the first time in German-speaking countries. The black majesty was not shown in German cinemas .

action

After wondering for a long time why people fear it, death decides to search for the answer in human form. As Prince Sirki, he spends three days as Duke Lambert's guest. Some of the female guests are interested in him, but ultimately shy away from him. Only Grazia falls in love with him, even though she learns of his true nature. Death also falls in love with Grazia. When he learns of this, the duke, who is also the father of Grazia's fiancé Corrado, asks him to give her up and leave her with the mortals. Death has to decide whether to give in to his love for Grazia or renounce it and leave it among the living.

The film is based on the Italian play La Morte in Vacanze by Alberto Casella .

1934 was director Mitchell Leisen on the Film Festival in Venice the special recognition for Death Takes a Holiday . A radio play based on the film was also recorded and performed on March 22, 1937 at Cecil B. DeMille 's Lux Radio Theater . Speakers included Fredric March as Tod and his wife Florence Eldridge as Grazia.

The remake Rendezvous with Joe Black, starring Brad Pitt, was released in 1998 .
