Sir Guy Standing (1936)

Sir Guy Standing KBE (born September 1, 1873 in London , † February 24, 1937 in Hollywood , California ) was a British film and theater actor and naval commander.

Life

Guy Standing was born the son of the well-known actor Herbert Standing (1846–1923). Like his father, he became an actor and appeared in British and American theaters. His brothers Jack, Herbert Jr., Percy and Wyndham also pursued similar careers as actors.

On Broadway he had a total of 31 appearances from 1896 until his death. In 1914 he had two small film roles. He volunteered at the Royal Naval Reserve when the First World War broke out . Standing reached the rank of commander during the war . For a diplomatic mission to the USA, Standing was appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1918 , and Knight Commander a year later. After the end of the war he returned to acting. Paramount Pictures signed Sir Guy in 1933, where he was cast in 18 films until his death. Similar to C. Aubrey Smith , he played mostly venerable aristocrats, businessmen and generals in larger supporting roles. His first film was The Story of Temple Drake with Miriam Hopkins in the lead role. His better-known films include Death Takes a Holiday , Bengali and Signals to London . He also took on leading roles in smaller productions.

On February 24, 1937, Standing suddenly had a heart attack on Hollywood Boulevard and died. It is speculated that previous poisoning from a snake or spider bite caused the heart attack. During his life he was married to actresses Isabelle Urquhart, Blanche Burton and Dorothy Hammond. He had two children with his third wife, Dorothy Hammond (1876–1950). They also became actors. His grandson Sir John Standing (* 1934) is also a well-known film and television actor.
