John Standing

Sir John Ronald Leon standing, 4th Baronet (* 16 August 1934 in London , England , United Kingdom as John Ronald Leon ) is an English actor .

Early life

John Standing was born in London to actress Kay Hammond and stockbroker Sir Ronald George Leon, 3rd Baronet. On his mother's side, he comes from an excellent family of actors, including his great-grandfather Herbert Standing (1846–1923) and his grandfather Sir Guy Standing (1873–1937). His stepfather was actor Sir John Clements . He attended Eton College and Millfield School in Somerset , and later served in King's Royal Rifle Corps as a lieutenant before studying at Byam Shaw School of Art in London.

Career

John Standing started his career in Peter Brook's production Titus Andronicus (1955). He later starred in Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest , Ring Around the Moon , A Sense of Detachment by John Osborne and Noël Cowards Private Lives , with Maggie Smith . He was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Close Of Play at the National Theater in 1979 . He made his film debut The Wild and the Willing (1962) and subsequently appeared in cinema productions such as King Rat (1965), The Psychopath (1966), The Eagle Has Landed (1976), The Elephant Man (1980), Nightflyers (1987), Mrs. Dalloway (1997) and A Good Woman (2004).

One of his most significant television roles was as Sidney Godolphin on the BBC series The First Churchills (1969). Other television appearances were Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1979); the Independent Television - sitcom The Other 'Arf (1980-1984), with Lorraine Chase ; The Choir (1995) and King Solomon's Mines (2004). In the US , he was in guest roles in many weekend programs such as LA Law - Star Lawyers, Tricks, Trials , Civil Wars and Murder is her hobby . He starred with Robert Wagner and Samantha Smith in the 1985 action series Lime Street .

He appeared in the film Nightflyer (1987), based on a story by George RR Martin . In 2011 he appeared as Jon Arryn in the first episode of the HBO series Game of Thrones , based on Martin's novel A Song of Ice and Fire . Standing can only be seen in the first episode, but the death of his character is influential for the plot of the series.

Private life

He succeeded his father as the 4th Baronet in 1964. Until 1937 the family owned Bletchley Park , a country estate in the English town of Bletchley in the Borough of Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire . It was used as a decryption center during World War II . John Standing married Jill Melford in 1961 . You have a son, Alexander John. They divorced in 1972.

In 1984 he married Sarah Kate Forbes, the daughter of the film director Bryan Forbes and the actress Nanette Newman and sister of the television presenter Emma Forbes ; they have three children.
