Moon base Alpha 1 ( English Space: 1999 ) is a British - Italian science fiction television series from the 1970s, which was invented by the couple Gerry and Sylvia Anderson .
action
The action begins in 1999, 25 years in the future from a production perspective. The Alpha Moon Base is a manned research facility on Earth's moon with over 300 people . Above the lunar surface, astronauts are training the first manned flight to the planet Meta in eagle spaceships, where there are vague indications of the existence of intelligent life. While preparations for the long-term interstellar expedition are in full swing on Alpha, a strange disease rages among the crew members, destroying the brain and causing the victims to frenzy. Although pilots of the meta ferry are also affected, the epidemic is covered up so as not to endanger the meta expedition.
John Koenig, who as the new commander of the moon base is to prepare the landing on Meta, becomes suspicious and begins to investigate the incidents more closely. Contrary to the urging of the Commander on Earth, Commissioner Simmons, Koenig postpones the start until more detailed information about the disease is available. During research, the scientist Victor Bergman ( Barry Morse ) and the ward doctor Dr. Helena Russell ( Barbara Bain ) magnetic radiation apparently emanating from the nuclear waste dumps on the moon, where the earth's nuclear waste is disposed of. These seem to have caused both the epidemic and the warming of the garbage dump 1, which catches fire shortly afterwards. Koenig immediately takes measures to distribute the remaining concentrated radioactive waste over a larger area of the lunar surface in order to prevent an explosion of the larger camp 2. However, the magnetic effects have already become so strong that they cause the intended transport spaceships to crash. On September 13, 1999, garbage dump 2 ignites. The released energy is so powerful that it hurls the moon out of orbit on earth. Due to this turbulence, the crew of the base are initially unable to act and can only react again when the moon has already moved too far from the earth to be able to evacuate the base. It drifts inexorably and inexorably further out into space. There so-called space warps (space-time jumps) occur at incalculable intervals , through which the moon overcomes light years in seconds.
The people of Alpha, who have become homeless in space and time, are drifting towards an uncertain future. On their cosmic odyssey they encounter a wide variety of cultures and forms of life that are not always friendly. In the Scottish Tales episode, for example, there is contact between the lunar base and an earth that has become alien to the alpha crew due to the long time lag.
Actors and roles
The crew of the lunar base consists of scientists from different nations under the direction of Commander John Koenig. After the first season extensive personnel changes were made: Martin Landau, Barbara Bain, Zienia Merton and Nick Tate stayed with the series. Barry Morse, Prentis Hancock, Suzanne Roquette and Clifton Jones lost their engagement, their characters were removed from the series without further explanation. Dr. Mathias (Anton Phillips) disappeared from the moon base shortly after the beginning of the second year without comment. From the second season, the shapeshifter Maya (Catherine Schell) joins them; she was met on the planet Psychon, which exploded shortly afterwards. Tony Verdeschi (Tony Anholt), Commander Yasko (Yasuko Nagazumi), Bill Fraser (John Hug) and Dr. Vincent (Jeffrey Kissoon) aboard Alpha.

Episodes
Charisma
The series was first broadcast from 1975 to 1977 and had a total of 48 episodes in two seasons. In Germany, ZDF showed 30 episodes from August 7, 1977 to October 15, 1978, which were shortened by around 10 minutes. Several episodes were broadcast on FS 2 in 1982. From March 30, 2013, RTL Nitro broadcast all 48 episodes in their entirety and unabridged as the German TV premiere on Saturdays. The DVD post-synchronization from ems was used for this.
The order depends on the DVD release. The German titles of the episodes not broadcast on ZDF, which were awarded for the first time for DVD release, were also taken into account.

Publication on DVD and Blu-ray
The 18 episodes not broadcast by ZDF were published in German re-dubbing on DVD by ems from 2004 . The scenes cut since the first broadcast on ZDF were also dubbed and reinserted for the DVD release.
In 2012, Sunrise released the first season of the series for the first time in HD on Blu-ray ; but divided into two boxes with a misleading name. The series was released simultaneously in full (seasons 1 and 2) on DVD using the same HD material. It was also of marketing film a 3D Blu-ray (converted) with the episodes The disaster , return of the dead , the black sun and a ring of light released.
A new edition in HD of season 1 appeared in the TV jewels series on Alive on November 27, 2015 on Blu-ray Disc. The content of the episodes is identical to both the old ems DVDs and the Sunrise Blu-rays. Season 2 first appeared in HD on February 26, 2016.

All film versions are episode cuts (see compilation film ). In the case of the films, the plot was changed slightly and moved to the year 2100. In addition, additional scenes were shot for Alien Attack (all scenes that take place on earth). The films Alien Attack - The Extraterrestrials Strike Back and Black Sun - The Death Planet Attacks appeared in Germany on Arcade Video on VHS and were re-dubbed for this. Attack on Alpha 1 appeared on CBS / Fox and received a German version for the first time; the two-part series was not broadcast on ZDF. Cosmic Princess did not appear on VHS in Germany, but celebrated its German premiere on DVD.
Another feature film was released in Italy under the title Spazio: 1999 . It is a compilation of the episodes Breakaway , Ring Around The Moon and Another Time, Another Place . Ennio Morricone composed a new score for the film, which was only shown in theaters in Italy and was released on VHS by Avofilm.
Publication on DVD
All four films were released in Germany on DVD by Starlight Film (Amaray cover) and Marketing Film (limited hard box). The DVDs contain all available German dubbed versions, so that you can choose between video and TV synchronization for three films.
production
First season
Gerry Anderson and his wife Sylvia Anderson prepared the second season of the series UFO in 1973 . The plot should now focus on the lunar base and set in 1999. First, the moon base, similar to the first season, was supposed to defend the earth from threats from space. However, due to falling quotas, the concept was again significantly changed; Space: 1999 evolved from a sequel to the UFO series . It was supposed to tell the journey of the moon through space, which was thrown out of the earth's orbit by a catastrophe. ITC had already put 50,000 pounds into the UFO project and could now continue to use it. Production began in November 1973. One episode of the series cost £ 120,000; it was the most expensive on British television at the time. The series met with enthusiasm, especially among US audiences.
The theme music for the first season was composed by Barry Gray and the rock musician Vic Elmes , who had previously performed successfully with his band " Christie " (worldwide hits such as Yellow River and San Bernadino since 1970). Barry Gray, who had received a classical music education, could not do much with rock musicians, but the mixture of classical and rock music in the theme music was groundbreaking. Vic Elmes played the famous guitar riff himself. As a backing band "Zebra" played
The special effects and the design of the "eagles" were based on the look of the 2001 film : A Space Odyssey . Brian Johnson had worked on both projects. The eagle design in turn served as a source of inspiration for George Lucas .
Second season
Almost a year passed between the production of the first season and its sequel. Since the series was particularly successful in the US, New York insisted that the series be more adapted to US tastes. Gerry Anderson, who had since separated from his wife, hired Fred Freiberger , who was responsible for the drastic changes that followed: A large number of the well-known characters were replaced without comment, the sets and uniforms were changed and new theme music was composed by Derek Wadsworth . In addition, the scripts were made more action-heavy.
Planned third season
While filming the final episodes of Season 2, the production team developed plans for a Season 3 and an offshoot series; Moon base Alpha had been sufficiently successful for a sequel in the second year, even with a changed concept. The third season should only consist of 13 episodes. In addition, Maya should switch to a new series called Maya , which should also have 13 episodes per year.
ITC President Lew Grade promised the budget for the two series, but withdrew his offer as he instead invested in advertising the $ 40 million production, Lifts the Titanic . The sequel and the Maya series were off the table.
Lew Grade used the remaining budget of Moon Base Alpha 1 for the crime series Simon Templar - A Gentleman with a Halo , which was discontinued after a season and could not build on the successful original Simon Templar with Roger Moore .
The 3rd season of Lunar Base Alpha 1 appeared in book form in the USA; 16 books were published by November 2014.
German versions
30 of the total of 48 episodes were dubbed for ZDF in the Alster Studios in Hamburg in 1977/78 and broadcast in a shortened version. In 2004 the series was first released completely on DVD. The previously missing scenes in the ZDF episodes were dubbed for this purpose and new dubbed versions were created for the 18 episodes left out by ZDF. The dubbing was done by TV + Synchron GmbH in Berlin on behalf of ems new media . Since the speakers for Martin Landau and Barry Morse had already passed away and Renate Pichler and Joachim Richert were no longer available, they were replaced by similar-sounding speakers. All other speakers for the ZDF version were hired again. If possible, the speakers for the guest stars were reactivated or replaced by similar-sounding voices. This restored dubbed version is the basis for all DVD and Blu-ray releases and was first seen on RTL Nitro in 2013.
The opening credits were generally shortened to a few seconds in the German version. In some episodes of the first season (e.g .: The black sun ) and in all episodes of the second season, a short excerpt from Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygène II was used as the theme music. For the episode return of the dead ZDF used the theme music from Star Wars in the form of Star Wars Disco version of Meco , which was number 1 in the US charts 1977th All German versions of the opening credits are included on the ems DVDs and Alive Blu-rays as bonus material.
When it was first broadcast in Germany on ZDF, Mondbasis Alpha 1 had an audience rating of up to 40 percent of all viewers.
In the 1990s , three of the four feature films appeared on VHS. The films were edited by three different dubbing companies in Munich, Berlin ( Deutsche Synchron ) and Hamburg. The speakers therefore differ both from one another and from one another in comparison to the series.
Special features and curiosities
- When the episode Zoran's fate was first broadcast in Germany on October 15, 1978, the broadcast was interrupted in favor of reporting on the state elections in Bavaria and the end of the episode was withheld from viewers. Only because of massive protests by viewers, the ZDF submitted the last minutes of the episode five days later as part of the information program Die Drehscheibe , but without informing the audience in advance.
- In the German version of the episode Ein Ring von Licht (“Ring around the Moon”), Commander Koenig uses the Star Trek term “beaming” for the long-distance transport of objects.
- Some of the sets and props were reused in the James Bond film Moonraker in 1978/79, a few years after the series ended . For example, the instrument consoles fitted with PVC “bag lamps” in the anti-radar control room of Drax's satellites were originally used as control consoles in the headquarters of “Alpha”.
- Episode 12 of the Japanese science fiction cartoon series 009-1 shows eagle spaceships from the Alpha 1 moon base and SHADO-Mobile from UFO .
- In the episode The Last Trekkie ( Where No Fan Has Gone Before ) of the animated series Futurama you can see an eagle spaceship.
- In the Thunderbirds feature film Thunderbirds In Outer Space you can see "Eagle", "Falcon" and other spaceships from Moon Base Alpha 1 during the theme music .
- The band Fuzzbox has produced a music video for the song International Rescue , in which special effects scenes from Moon Base Alpha 1 have been incorporated. The Rah Band also used scenes from Gerry Anderson's SF series in the video for Clouds Across The Moon . Furthermore, scenes from Moon Base Alpha 1 were recycled in an episode of Wonder Woman . The video for Wishing by A Flock of Seagulls also contains scenes from the series.
- At the end of the film The Big One with His Extra-Terrestrial Little One you see a bomber and two Mark IX Hawk space fighters from the Moon Base Alpha 1 episode Attack from Space .
- The Bastei-Lübbe publishing house published 12 paperbacks for the 2nd season under the title Moon Station 1999 . The novel rights to the first season were owned by Breitschopf-Verlag, which published four books. Bastei-Lübbe translated all six novels of the second season into German. When the material seemed to run out after the publication of the English novels, Bastei-Lübbe quickly continued the successful novel series with its own German authors in six further volumes. In the last novel there is an alternate ending, where the Alphans manage to re-establish contact with the city of Texas City on Earth, and there is a permanent possibility of returning to Earth.
- For the film Attack on Alpha 1 , two different single records with the final title song were released: one record with the original English song Space by Oliver Onions and another record with Flieg mit mir (Raumschiff 1999) by Berry Sarluis (German version of the song Space ) .
Sequels
Fan films
The seven-minute fan short Message from Moonbase Alpha was produced for the Breakaway Convention in Los Angeles in September 1999 . Sandra Benes reports in it with a final message and announces that the Alphans have finally found a planet after a 20-year odyssey and are settling on Terra Alpha .
For this film, props and costumes were used that hardly differ from the series and Zienia Merton took over the role of Sandra Benes again. The script came from Johnny Byrne , who wrote most of the scripts for Moon Base Alpha 1 in the 1970s .
Other fan films were also made in which the stories of the moon base were continued. For example, Barry Morse returned to his old role in The Return Of Victor Bergman .
Reinterpretation
In February 2012 it was reported that ITV Studios America and HDFILMS were working on a remake called Space: 2099 .
