Oxygène ( French for oxygen ) is an instrumental - album of electronic music composed and produced by French musician Jean-Michel Jarre . It was published in France in December 1976 , then worldwide in July 1977. Oxygène brought Jarre the breakthrough as a third studio album and sold around 12 million times worldwide. The piece Oxygène (Part IV) , which, along with Part II , was released as a single, was particularly well received .
The cover motif comes from a work by the French artist Michel Granger , which was discovered by Jarre's then partner Charlotte Rampling shortly before the album was released.
For the 30th anniversary, Jarre recorded the entire album again in 2007 and also embarked on a major tour with the original equipment. The new recording and a recording of the concert form - albeit without an audience - were published under the title Oxygene (New Master Recording) .
