Val Guest
Val Guest (born December 11, 1911 in London as Valmond Maurice Grossmann , † May 10, 2006 in Palm Springs ) was a British director , screenwriter and film producer . Guest was considered to be particularly versatile.
Life
Guest began his acting career on British theater stages and in mini-roles in early British talkies. He also ran the Hollywood Reporter's London office on his own . An encounter with Marcel Varnel led him to write screenplays for Gainsborough Studios . These films were usually directed by Varnel, and star comedian Will Hay was often the leading actor. He wrote most of the scripts with Marriott Edgar and JOC Orton . In the early 1940s he began making the first short films for the Ministry of Information . For the first time direct a major motion picture in 1943 he led the musical Miss London Ltd. . Between 1954 and 1960 he worked for the Hammer Company almost a dozen times . He has directed some of the supposedly best and worst British films. Especially from the mass tower above the two science fiction films shock ( The Quatermass Xperiment , 1955) and The Day the Earth Caught Fire ( The Day the Earth Caught Fire , 1961).
In 1954 he married the actress Yolande Donlan , with whom he was together until his death. Between 1951 and 1963 both worked together on eight films. Other well-known films guests were for example Casino Royale , Carry On Admiral (who inspired Gerald Thomas to his successful film series Carry-on… ), as well as Daggers in the Kasbah ( Where the Spies Are ). He directed several episodes of the television series Die 2 and Mondbasis Alpha 1 .
In 1960 he was for the film enemies of yesterday ( Yesterday's Enemy , 1959) in two categories for the British Film Academy Award nominated in 1961 for hounding ( Hell Is a City , 1960). In 1962, he won the Best British Screenplay Award for The Day the Earth Catched Fire . Guest has scripted nearly 80 films and series, and has directed over 50 productions. He produced some of the films himself. He even wrote songs for several of his films.
